Materials* :
- Decorative cardstock paper
- Scissors
- XL circle punch (5 cm / 2 inches) or a glass to trace a circle
- Clear adhesive film
- Eyelet setter and eyelets
- Cotton thread (or fine decorative thread)
- 2 mm or 2.5 mm crochet hook
- Sharp needle (thin enough to pierce cardstock)
- White paper glue
1. Choose your cardstock paper. It should be thick enough so it does not wrinkle easily.
I use vintage wallpaper samples or retro-style paper pads.
2. Cut two circles about 5 cm (2 inches) wide.
If you do not have a circle punch, use a glass to trace your circle on the back of the paper.
3. Glue the two circles together with white glue.
4. Cover both sides with clear adhesive film, then trim the circle neatly.
5. Choose your thread color. Thread your needle and tie a knot at the end.
Leave enough extra thread before the knot so you can tie both ends together when the round is finished.
6. Work blanket stitch all around the circle.
It does not need to be perfect, but try to keep your stitches as even as possible.
Need help with blanket stitch?
You will find plenty of tutorials with a quick Google search.
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- ch = chain
- *(. )* : repeat all around
8. Round 1 : Work single crochet all around the circle, about 2 sc in each space between the blanket stitches. Finish with 1 sl st.
You may need to make 3 sc in some spaces if your embroidery stitches are not perfectly even.
The most important thing is that the edging stays flexible and flat, without ruffling or tightening around the circle.
I’m offering you 3 edging options starting from Round 2.
Round 2 : Ch 3, then *(2 dc + 1 dc)* all around.
Close with 1 sl st in the first 3 chains.
Round 3 : Ch 3, then *(1 picot, 5 sc)* all around.
Close with 1 sl st. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Ch 3, then make 1 sl st in the first chain..
You can also simply cut a strand of thread and knot it.
Round 2 : Skip 1 sc from the previous round.
*(5 dc in the next stitch, skip 1 sc from previous round, 1 sl st in next stitch)* all around.
Close with 1 sl st. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Bookmark Tie : Make a chain of 60 ch. Insert it through the eyelet and tie a knot at both ends.
You can also simply cut a strand of thread and knot it.
Round 2 : Ch 4, then *(skip 1 sc from previous round, 1 dc, 2 ch)* all around. Close with 1 sl st.
You can also simply cut a strand of thread and knot it.
